John Muir Trail: Ediza Lake to Cathedral Peak The John Muir Trail is a long-distance hiking trail taking in 338.6 kilometres of California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. Shadow Lake and Lake Ediza are extremely popular backpacking destinations, and camping restrictions apply. Shadow and Ediza Lakes Trail [CLOSED] is a 13 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Mammoth Lakes, California that features a lake and is rated as moderate. John Muir Trail North: Mostly clear with some snow patches near Rosalie/Gladys Lakes. The John Muir Trail (and Pacific Crest Trail) passes through this wilderness, and it can be reached from both sides of the Sierra crest. You can continue north to Garnet Lake from here, or take a 2-mile detour to Ediza Lake by continuing west. Backpacking Ediza Lake Agnew Meadows. Hike down into a canyon to Olaine Lake and then take Shadow Creek Trail up to Shadow Lake and John Muir Trail. We had our sights set on Ediza last September. The main climbing is now behind us. We started out by taking the PCT South/River/Shadow Lake trail which is just opposite the pit toilets and bear boxes. The trail dead ends into the river. At about 4 miles from the trailhead, the Shadow Lake trail connects with and joins the John Muir Trail. The trail between Shadow Lake and Ediza Lake is some of the most scenic, passing through beautiful alpine meadows and a meandering Shadow Creek. Ediza Lake as seen down below in the lower right of this picture from my vantage point, sits at 9,268ft. At the next four-way junction, about 0.8 miles, continue straight and follow the sign for Minaret Lake (PCT branches right towards Minaret Falls).
